Why do some cylindrical inductive proximity sensors have no thread?

Many manufacturers now offer these sensors with a threaded or smooth housing. Threaded will require tools. However, some smooth housing mounting brackets can be selected to be tool-free. This makes it easier and quicker to change and clean them.
