What are complementary outputs on an inductive proximity sensor?

The sensor will have two outputs, one output be OFF (known as normally open, N.O.) and one will be ON (known as normally closed, N.C.). When the sensor detects an object, the outputs will change state. As the object moves away and is no longer detected, then the outputs will revert to the normal state.
