What is the difference between an inductive and capacitive proximity sensor?

The main difference is inductive proximity sensors only detect metal objects (such as carbon steel, copper, brass, stainless steel), whereas capacitive proximity sensors detect both metal and non-conductive materials (such as glass, cardboard, plastic, liquids, etc).
