Sensors being used in the vicinity of arc welding equipment can be affected by the electric fields produced by the high electric current needed for electric/spot welding. To help avoid this, it's common practice to specify the use of weld-immune proximity sensors.

As well as having improved shielding from external magnetic fields, they also have a spatter resistant coating to help prevent spatter from sticking to the sensor.
