Can I remotely read the serial number of my 34970A?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)SummaryCan I remotely read the serial number of my 34970A?QuestionCan I remotely read the serial number of my 34970A?AnswerThere isn't a SCPI command that gives you the serial number of the instrument. For 34970A, the *IDN? command does not return the serial number. This happens because  the 34970A uses a memory that does not store the serial number internally.  The only possibility you might have is using the CALibration:STRing? query if anyone in the past stored the instrument serial number in the calibration memory. In fact, the CALibration:STRing command allows you to store one message in the mainframe calibration memory. For example, you can store the date when the last calibration was performed, the date when the next calibration is due, the instrument's serial number, or even the name and phone number of the person to contact for a new calibration If the calibration string does not help, you will have to physically read the serial number from the label on the back.
