Can I perform phase noise measurements on the E4407B while using Option 226 when the analyzer is in external mixing mode?
Automatic phase noise measurements using option 226 can only be performed within the base frequency band of the ESA analyzer (Ex. E4407B, 9 kHz – 26.5 GHz) and not while in external mixing mode. External mixing mode is accomplished with option AYZ, which is only allowable on the E4407B. When in external mixing mode, phase noise measurements on ESA can be performed manually using the built in marker noise functionality. Marker noise can be accessed by pressing [Marker], {More 1 of 2}, {Function}, {Marker Noise} on the analyzer. Marker noise reads out the average noise level, referenced to a 1 Hz noise power bandwidth, around the active marker (the marker plus 2.5 % of the sweep points on either side are averaged and a correction of 2.6 dB is applied.) If no marker is present, a marker appears at the center of the display. The RMS noise level (the mean value of the points) normalized to a 1 Hz noise power bandwidth, is read out. If marker noise is turned on while delta is selected, the signal to noise level is measured. Note: The PSA Series of analyzers can perform an automatic phase noise measurement while en in external mixing mode. For more information about phase noise, please visit Phase Noise Measurement.
